This could be the biggest thing since the Virgin Mary appeared in a piece of toast.  I am an lean, ego driven, nerdy racist. Not sure if this is my destiny or a cautionary nudge. Or maybe its just a random thing.

The world’s largest purveyor of lawn chemical poisons has bought its way into the National Wildlife Federation.
I hope this means they will stop using toxic pesticides in their bird feeders.

_Half of our nation's 80 million gardeners are now a half zone warmer according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wednesday new Plant Hardiness Zone Map, last updated in 1990.

Hardiness zones represent the average annual extreme minimum temperature during a 30-year period. In zone 5a, the lowest temperature on average was between minus 15 and minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit. In zone 5b, the coldest temperature is 10 to 15 degrees below zero. In 6a, the lowest temperature is minus 5 to minus 10.

INPAWS Spring Garden Tour: Game On!! 01/17/2012

From the INPAWS Garden Tour Chair,
The committee would love to have your garden on our tour. Your garden has wonderful examples of how a homeowner can incorporate native plants and green planting principles in a suburban neighborhood. I know the visitors will learn a lot from your garden that they can incorporate into their own gardens. If visitors are like they were last year, your asparagus will be a big hit.

Codeacademy Week 2 Complete 01/17/2012

Learning to code on the net is like going into a bar and asking people how to fix a back ache.  Everyone has a solution. Some good, some bad, some obsolete, some wrong. Simply configuring my computer with the proper version of ruby, rails, and database just so i could start learning was a two week endeavor. Its sort of like building your own lightsaber. My training curriculum: code year, rails casts, vim tutor, Satish Talim's Learning Ruby.

This is Geist Reservoir, Our Drinking Water
The Geist Watershed Alliance urges you to request a hearing on HB 1032 Phosphorus-free Lawn Fertilizers at this year’s legislative session.

Indiana water resources face many challenges. Most Indiana lakes and rivers face nutrient overloading and algae blooms -- which could cut down on recreation, tourism dollars, and property values.   These blooms pose a health risk to your community; contact with the water can lead to dermatitis (rashes and itchy skin), and some of the toxins can cause liver toxicity and neurotoxicity.

HB 1032 will reduce the amount of phosphorus making its way into our waterways. Taking action on this bill will help minimize one significant source of phosphorus impairing our waterways.

Thank you,

Matthew Newell

Monsato Seeds Failing to Kill Bugs 01/13/2012

Monsato's genetically modified seeds to be resistant against glyphosate (a herbicide) and produce bT (a naturally occurring pesticide).  Unfortunately, nature also genetically modifies weeds and pests to be resistant against these traits. I think the most interesting way to follow this story is by stock price.
